Lahore Orders Crackdown on Unsafe School Transport

Lahore Traffic Police has ordered a crackdown on overloading and the use of gas cylinders in school vans, rickshaws and buses.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Sherazi directed traffic police officials to take strict action against vehicles that carry schoolchildren in violation of safety regulations.
Sherazi said drivers must not use LPG cylinders in vans, wagons or rickshaws that transport schoolchildren. He also directed traffic police to stop rickshaw drivers from allowing children to sit in the front seat.
The CTO ordered officials to prevent drivers from hanging schoolbags or other items from the sides of rickshaws. He also barred passengers from sitting in the front seat of rickshaws operating on Canal Road.
Sherazi directed pickup drivers to carry no more than one passenger in the front seat. He instructed DSPs and the Education Unit to inform school administrations and parents about the safety measures. Sherazi urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s safety and ensure that they use safe transportation.
