Karachi cardiologists have brought recognition to Pakistan in global medical research.
A new study on the treatment of heart attacks has revealed that not every blocked artery requires a stent, and that modern technology can help avoid unnecessary procedures.
The international study included more than 1,800 patients, while around 200 patients from Karachi’s National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases also took part.
According to Professor Dr Abdul Hakeem, Director of the Interventional Cardiology Programme at NICVD, modern technology makes it possible to accurately assess blood flow and blockage in arteries.
He said this allows doctors to identify patients who do not need a stent.
Experts said the findings could help prevent unnecessary stent placement and support better medical decisions in the treatment of heart attack patients.
