This Hidden Setting Can Stop You From Doomscrolling YouTube
YouTube includes a Time management section that can help users track how long they spend watching videos, limit Shorts scrolling, and set reminders to stop watching.
The tools are designed to interrupt long viewing sessions and make users more aware of how much time they spend on the platform.
On Android, the settings are available by opening YouTube, tapping the profile picture, selecting Settings, and then opening Time management.
The Time management page shows a user’s daily average, viewing time for the current day, and total watch time over the previous seven days.
These figures are based on YouTube watch history.
A weekly graph also provides a clearer view of viewing patterns and can make it easier to identify days when usage is particularly high.
Daily Limit for YouTube Shorts
YouTube also allows users to place a daily limit on how long they can scroll through the Shorts feed.
The Shorts feed limit can be set to a specific amount of time or even zero minutes.
Once the limit is reached, YouTube displays a reminder that Shorts scrolling has been paused for the day.
Setting the limit to zero may also result in fewer Shorts appearing on the YouTube home page.
Get Reminded to Take a Break
The Remind me to take a break option is designed for users who lose track of time while watching regular YouTube videos.
Users can choose how frequently the reminder appears.
When it activates, YouTube pauses the current video and asks the viewer to decide whether to continue watching or step away.
The reminder can be dismissed, but the interruption creates a stopping point instead of allowing one video to automatically lead into another.
Set a Bedtime Reminder
YouTube also includes a Remind me when it’s bedtime setting for users who tend to continue watching videos late at night.
Users can select a start and end time for the reminder.
They can also choose whether the reminder should interrupt the current video or wait until it finishes.
Waiting until the video ends allows users to complete what they are watching while still creating a clear stopping point before starting another video.
The setting is available under Settings > Time management.
You Don’t Need to Stop Using YouTube Completely
YouTube’s Time management tools do not block users from watching content entirely.
Instead, they provide ways to monitor viewing time, control Shorts usage, and create regular stopping points through break and bedtime reminders.
The tools can be dismissed or adjusted, but they may help users notice when a short viewing session is turning into a much longer one.
