Google Now 88% Compliant With Pakistani Laws: PTA Chairman

Google’s compliance with Pakistani regulations has reached 88 percent, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman said, as the regulator continues to engage with social media companies over digital safety and compliance with local laws.

Speaking at the launch of Google’s Digital Pasban program, the PTA chairman said the authority receives around 500 social media related complaints each day.

He said the PTA holds in person meetings with social media companies every two months, while he holds weekly online meetings with their representatives to discuss Pakistani laws and regulatory requirements.

Hafeez Ur Rehman said the PTA was also taking measures to improve connectivity across Pakistan, which he described as increasingly important in modern life. He noted that Pakistan auctioned 480 MHz of spectrum in March, the highest amount of spectrum auctioned by the country in a single auction, as part of efforts to improve connectivity and digital services.

The PTA chairman said the rapid development of new technologies was creating the need for updated regulations and regulatory frameworks. He said the authority was working with social media platforms to improve compliance with Pakistani laws through regular engagement and communication.

He also highlighted concerns around children’s use of digital platforms. Comparing current habits with those of previous generations, he said children now spend more time indoors and on digital platforms, making it important for parents, regulators and technology companies to work together to promote responsible social media use.

Hafeez Ur Rehman said creating safer online spaces was particularly important for children and future generations, adding that cooperation between parents and regulators would be necessary to address the challenges associated with increasing digital platform use.
