Bots have overtaken humans in web traffic, and non-human traffic could become 1,000 times larger than human traffic within five years if current trends continue.
Cloudflare’s data showed bots accounted for 57.5 percent of HTTP requests to HTML content, compared with 42.5 percent from humans. Bots now easily outnumber humans.
The figures do not mean that machines now consume more internet content than people in every sense. Cloudflare’s measurement is based on HTTP requests to HTML content, while humans still dominate activities such as streaming, scrolling and other forms of online consumption.
The gap could widen dramatically as artificial intelligence agents become more capable of browsing websites, retrieving information and carrying out tasks on behalf of users.

The rapid growth is being driven in part by AI agents, which can visit far more websites than a person would while performing a single task. For example, a person shopping for a product might visit several websites, while an AI agent performing the same task could potentially access thousands.
The shift is changing the nature of the internet from a system primarily designed around human browsing to one increasingly populated by automated systems, APIs and other machines.
Still, not all of this traffic is malicious. AI agents can legitimately search for information, compare products, retrieve data, interact with APIs and complete tasks for users. Cloudflare says more than half of the crawler requests it identified in June were related to AI training.
For businesses, the shift could also complicate traffic measurement, advertising, search visibility and website economics because a growing number of requests may come from machines rather than potential human customers.
