Reportedly two people were killed and 100s injured in incidents of celebratory aerial firing and celebrations on the eve of Pakistan’s Independence Day across major cities.
The injured were taken to major hospitals across key public spots in major cities of Pakistan.
A police surgeon told reporters that a man and an infant died after being struck during aerial firing incidents. A woman who was brought to hospital with a gunshot wound also later died. Police later said her death resulted from accidental firing.
Edhi had earlier reported 86 injuries, including 59 men, 17 children and 10 women in Karachi, following incidents of aerial firing in different parts of the city.
The incidents were reported in areas including Lyari, Saddar, Korangi, Malir, Azizabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Orangi Town, Jamshed Quarters and Defence.
Police also launched a crackdown against aerial firing. In the East district, 10 suspects were arrested and weapons allegedly used in the firing were recovered.
The arrests were made in the jurisdictions of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Sharea Faisal, Sachal, Gulistan-i-Johar and SITE Super Highway police stations.
Police in the West district separately arrested three suspects over aerial firing incidents.
Despite repeated restrictions, celebratory gunfire remains a recurring problem during Independence Day and New Year celebrations. Meanwhile, it isn’t clear why the public started riots as per incidents reported in Lahore, Multan and Karachi.
Last year, three people were killed and more than 100 injured in celebratory gunfire during Independence Day celebrations.
