US Announces New Global Visa Policy

The United States has announced a new global visa restriction policy targeting individuals involved in cybercrime, cyberscams, and online sextortion.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the policy follows President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14390 on combating cybercrime, fraud, and predatory schemes targeting American citizens.

The US Department of State said scammers stole at least $10 billion from Americans in 2024. It said many of these scams were carried out by Chinese transnational criminal organizations that also engage in money laundering, corruption, and human trafficking. The department added that criminals operating overseas have targeted American children through sextortion schemes.

The new policy, introduced under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, applies to people who commit or facilitate cybercrime and cyber-enabled crimes, including cyberscams and sextortion. The United States may also deny visas to their immediate family members.

The Trump administration said it will impose sanctions, pursue criminal prosecutions, seize assets, seek extraditions, and work with international law enforcement agencies to dismantle criminal scam networks. Rubio said the United States will continue denying visas to people involved in these crimes and pursue those who target and exploit American citizens.
