Sindh’s newly introduced facial recognition-based attendance system for public school employees faced technical problems on the first day of its pilot phase, forcing some staff members to rely on manual attendance.
The Facial Recognition Attendance Monitoring and Evaluation System (FRAMES) has been launched on a pilot basis in six districts, including Karachi East, Hyderabad, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Ghotki, and Umerkot.
The pilot covers 49,565 teaching and non-teaching employees working in government schools across these districts.
However, staff at some schools experienced problems while attempting to mark their attendance through the FRAMES mobile application. Users reportedly encountered server-related issues as well as errors showing that their schools had not been assigned to their accounts.
Repeated attempts to register attendance were unsuccessful in some cases, prompting employees to use the traditional paper-based system.
FRAMES has been introduced to replace manual attendance with a digital mechanism aimed at improving transparency and strengthening the monitoring of staff punctuality and absenteeism.
Under the system, employees are required to mark their attendance when arriving at school and again when leaving. The application uses facial recognition to verify the employee’s identity and records the time of attendance.
The system has also been designed to work without an internet connection. In addition, employees can submit leave applications and access or download their monthly attendance records through the app.
The technical issues reported during the initial rollout are expected to be reviewed as part of the pilot phase.
Authorities plan to assess the results of the trial before gradually expanding FRAMES to public schools across Sindh.
