Punjab to Scrap Old Vehicles
Punjab has approved a major decision to deal with old and unfit vehicles across the province, allowing such vehicles to be officially scrapped under a new ordinance.
According to the ordinance, vehicles whose registration has been cancelled or withdrawn will be treated as unfit vehicles. Vehicles that do not obtain a fitness certificate or emissions certificate will also be subject to scrapping.
In addition, vehicles destroyed in accidents, fires or natural disasters may also be declared scrap. Owners will also be allowed to voluntarily submit their own unfit vehicles for scrapping.
These vehicles will be taken to designated scrapping centres, which will be set up in both the public and private sectors. Usable parts will be removed, while the remaining material will be recycled.
The ordinance introduces a new system for scrapping old and polluting vehicles in Punjab. The government will frame detailed rules for the process.
The Punjab governor has approved the third major amendment to the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, after which the new law will take effect immediately. Vehicles with cancelled registration will now be treated as end-of-life vehicles.
The Punjab government says the purpose of the system is to reduce smoke pollution and ensure a cleaner environment.
