The Punjab government has decided to develop standardized operating procedures (SOPs) for nursery and neonatology units in public hospitals to improve newborn care and strengthen safety measures.
A technical working group has been formed to prepare standards for the clinical and administrative management of these units, with Professor Dr. Masood Sadiq appointed as its convener.
The group will develop standardized procedures for newborn care and recommend clinical criteria for the admission and discharge of infants from neonatal units.
It will also assess fire hazards, electrical load risks, and emergency evacuation arrangements in neonatal facilities.
As part of the initiative, detailed SOPs will be prepared for fire safety, firefighting, and emergency evacuation. Training models will also be developed for doctors, nurses, and support staff to ensure the safe evacuation and transfer of newborn babies during emergencies.
The working group will also prepare checklists and audit tools to monitor compliance with the new SOPs across neonatal units.
The group has been directed to submit its recommendations to the competent authority within seven days.
