Considering the devastating event at PIMS Hospital, it has emerged that a fire had also broken out in the nursing hostel about a month earlier, raising fresh questions about safety lapses at the facility.
According to the inquiry report, the fire started at around 3 am on the night of July 6 at the reception area of the PIMS nursing hostel.
Three sofa sets in the lobby were damaged in the blaze, but the 78 female students present in the hostel at the time remained safe.
The inquiry committee had recommended departmental action against the hostel warden and security staff, but the report said the exact cause of the fire could not be determined because no electrical or forensic findings were available.
The report found that security guards Wajid Mahmood and Shaukat Mahmood were absent from their posts during duty hours.
It also accused hostel warden Zainab Sahar of failing to maintain required records and follow standard operating procedures.
Investigators further found that men were residing inside the female hostel without permission.
The hostel was also missing basic safety arrangements, including an emergency plan, fire alarms and CCTV cameras.
Although lower-level employees were suspended after the fire inquiry, the committee’s recommendations were not carried out.
