GTA V Is Finally Coming to Android

An unofficial native version of Grand Theft Auto V is being developed for Android following the release of a community-made Nintendo Switch port.

The project comes from M0jso of Paralympics Productions, the developer behind the recent native Switch version. Reports from Tom’s Hardware, VideoCardz, and PCLabs confirm that Android is the developer’s next target.

Designed to Run Natively on Android

The Android project is intended to run GTA V directly on ARM-based mobile hardware rather than using a Windows emulator, compatibility layer, or cloud streaming service.

This follows the approach used for the Nintendo Switch version, where the game was adapted and recompiled to run directly on the console’s NVIDIA Tegra X1 processor.

The Switch project uses GTA V Legacy version 1.0.2699, based on the branch associated with the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions of the game.

Reports say the project relies on GTA V source code that leaked in 2023, allowing the developers to reverse-engineer parts of the game and recompile them for ARM hardware.

Switch Port Shows What Is Possible

The existing Switch version provides an early indication of how demanding a native mobile port could be.

On a standard Switch, reported performance generally ranges from around 10 to 25fps. An overclocked Switch OLED can reach close to 30fps in less demanding areas, although performance drops in scenes with more characters and visual effects.

Developers also reduced draw distances and particle effects and compressed game assets to work within the Switch’s 4GB of memory. The resulting installation is around 49GB to 50GB.

Android Release Date Not Confirmed

The Android version remains in development, and there is currently no confirmed public release date.

It is also important to note that this is an unofficial community project. Rockstar Games has not announced or released GTA V for Android and is not involved with the port.

If completed, the project would provide a way to run GTA V directly on compatible Android hardware without relying on the emulation and streaming methods currently used to play the game on smartphones.
