The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) has introduced a new examination pattern for five core subjects at the SSC and HSSC levels.
The revised pattern will divide question papers equally between multiple choice questions and descriptive questions. Students will receive 50% MCQs and 50% descriptive questions in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science.
The FBISE Board of Governors approved the new examination pattern during its 124th meeting on July 28, 2026. The board will implement the new pattern in phases under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024, which carries 1,200 marks.
Phase One: Second Annual Examination 2026
The FBISE will introduce the new pattern at the SSC-I and HSSC-I levels from the Second Annual Examination 2026. The change will apply to fresh students appearing in these examinations for the first time under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024.
Phase Two: First Annual Examination 2027
The same pattern will apply to SSC-II and HSSC-II students from the First Annual Examination 2027 onward if they appeared in the Second Annual Examination 2026 under the new pattern.
The FBISE will also apply the revised pattern to all SSC-I and HSSC-I students appearing in the First Annual Examination 2027 under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024.
Phase Three: First Annual Examination 2028
From the First Annual Examination 2028 onward, the FBISE will extend the new pattern to SSC-II and HSSC-II students who previously took their respective SSC-I or HSSC-I examinations under the same pattern.
The FBISE has also developed Assessment Frameworks, Model Question Papers, SLO Alignment Charts and Tables of Specifications for the five subjects to support the new examination system. The board has made these materials available through its official website.
