The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center (PKLI&RC), Rawalpindi, is set to begin kidney and liver transplants in September after receiving license approval from the Punjab Human Organ Transplant Authority (PHOTA).
The hospital has already registered 20 kidney transplant patients and their donors, as well as eight liver transplant patients and their donors.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Institute of Urology and Transplantation at Murree Road, Shamsabad, on April 14, 2023. The facility was later affiliated with PKLI Lahore and granted the status of a PKLI hospital.
PKLI Rawalpindi currently offers emergency and outpatient department (OPD) services, dialysis, laser treatment, lithotripsy for breaking and removing kidney stones without surgery, CT scans, and laboratory testing.
The transplant program will operate under the supervision of Dr. Faisal Masood Dar, Dean of PKLI Lahore and Rawalpindi and one of the world’s leading liver transplant surgeons. The hospital is also expected to introduce robotic surgery soon.
PKLI Rawalpindi Project Director Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Khan said the hospital has four modular operation theaters, an intensive care unit (ICU), a high-dependency unit (HDU), and radiology and pathology services.
He added that human resource arrangements have been completed, with two kidney transplant surgeons and two liver transplant surgeons, along with their respective teams, available at the facility.
According to Dr. Zulfiqar, all kidney and liver transplants will be carried out in accordance with PHOTA rules and regulations. Only blood relatives will be allowed to donate a kidney or part of their liver to a patient.
