Facebook and Instagram to Activate New Teen Restrictions After $16.7 Billion Fine
Meta has agreed to pay up to $16.68 billion to settle lawsuits filed by 29 US states over child safety on Facebook and Instagram.
The settlement will also require Meta to introduce stricter rules for teenage users.
Under the deal, Facebook and Instagram will have daily usage limits and nighttime restrictions for children. Meta will also strengthen measures to stop children from accessing age-restricted content.
Meta has denied any wrongdoing.
The deal also settles separate privacy claims linked to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. California, Illinois, New Mexico and Washington, D.C. will receive a combined $459.3 million under that part of the settlement. These states accused Meta of collecting personal information from children without the required parental permission.
The latest settlement adds to Meta’s growing legal pressure over child safety and privacy issues in the US.
Earlier this year, Meta faced separate rulings in New Mexico that resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties and additional youth-safety requirements.
