The Sindh government has decided to conduct fire safety audits of school buildings across the province, with the collected data to be uploaded to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) web page.
According to a notification, the School Education Department has appointed Deputy Secretary Ashraf Hussain Ansari as the focal person to coordinate matters related to the audits.
The move follows recent steps by the provincial government to strengthen fire safety arrangements at educational institutions.
In August, the Sindh Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions directed all privately managed schools to ensure that required fire prevention and safety systems remain functional at all times.
Schools were instructed to install and regularly test fire alarms, smoke detectors, and suitable fire extinguishers on every floor and at critical locations. They were also required to keep emergency exits, staircases, and evacuation routes unlocked, clearly marked, properly illuminated, and free from obstructions.
The directives also required periodic inspections of electrical wiring, switchboards, laboratories, kitchens, generator rooms, and other areas considered vulnerable to fire hazards.
Schools were further asked to display updated evacuation plans and emergency instructions, conduct at least three fire evacuation drills during each academic year, and maintain records of the exercises.
Teaching and non-teaching staff were also required to receive training in fire emergency response, evacuation procedures, and basic first aid.
