The Punjab government has released Rs. 4.83 billion to the Punjab Sahulat Bazaar Authority to expand Sahulat Bazaars and Sahulat on-the-go facilities across the province under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2026-27.
A total of Rs. 19 billion has been allocated for the project, which aims to establish one Sahulat Bazaar and one Sahulat on-the-go facility in every tehsil of Punjab.
According to a senior official, the Finance Department recently released Rs. 4.83 billion to the authority, enabling it to complete ongoing Sahulat Bazaar projects and related facilities in different tehsils.
The initiative is aimed at providing daily-use items to the public at affordable prices.
Currently, 27 Sahulat Bazaars and 41 Sahulat on-the-go facilities are under construction across Punjab. Of these, 24 Sahulat Bazaars and 23 Sahulat on-the-go facilities are expected to become operational next month.
Once these projects are completed, 139 of Punjab’s 154 tehsils across 38 districts will have Sahulat Bazaar facilities.
Sahulat on-the-go facilities are currently under construction in Chunian, Kasur, Shahkot, Malakwal, Sahiwal, Ahmedpur East, Ahmedpur Sial, Faisalabad Saddar, Chichawatni, Khanpur, Bahawalpur Saddar, Rawalpindi city, Nishtar in Lahore, Dina, Kharian, Zafarwal, Pattoki, Model Town, Multan, Jalalpur Pirwala, Bhalwal, Bhera, Jahanian, DG Khan, Sargodha city, Minchinabad, Fort Abbas, Bahawalnagar, Haroonabad, and Arifwala.
Sahulat Bazaars are also under construction in 23 of these tehsils.
The tendering process for projects in the remaining 15 tehsils has been completed, while contracts are expected to be awarded within about a week.
The official said the expansion would allow people in most cities and towns to access Sahulat Bazaar facilities during the next Ramadan, while the government aims to cover all tehsils by June next year.
The government is also considering expanding the network in Lahore, where the existing 10 Sahulat Bazaars, 15 Sahulat on-the-go facilities, and 25 relief markets are considered insufficient for a population of more than 15 million.
Additional facilities are being considered for Baghbanpura, Mughalpura, Cantonment, Model Town, Ghazi Road, and parts of Samanabad that currently lack adequate Sahulat Bazaar coverage.
