The Capital Development Authority has declared the fire safety condition at Islamabad’s Poly Clinic a “hazard alert” after a recent audit found serious safety gaps at the hospital.
According to the CDA audit, Poly Clinic lacks several basic fire prevention and emergency response facilities, including hose reels, wet risers, yard hydrants, an automatic sprinkler system, a fire alarm system and smoke detection devices.
The report also found no fire pump set or dedicated underground water storage tank for firefighting. It said access for fire engines remains inadequate, while several areas of the hospital lack proper emergency exit routes and safe evacuation arrangements.
The CDA further warned that poor electrical wiring poses a major fire risk. It also noted the absence of a fire control room, insufficient emergency lighting, weak exit signage and inadequate fire protection for generator and transformer rooms.
The audit found that the hospital has not installed fire doors or proper fire compartmentation to stop the spread of fire between sections. It also said maintenance of fire safety equipment and staff training remain insufficient.
The authority directed Poly Clinic to immediately complete all fire and life safety requirements, prepare an emergency evacuation plan and standard operating procedures, and appoint fire wardens to train staff.
The CDA said the hospital must also improve safety measures for oxygen and gas handling and comply with recommendations from previous audit reports without delay.
