Electricity consumers across most of Pakistan will pay an additional Rs. 0.7503 per unit in their August bills after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved a fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for electricity consumed in June 2026.
The adjustment will allow power distribution companies to recover approximately Rs. 9.8 billion from consumers. The additional charge will apply to consumers of K-Electric and all ex WAPDA distribution companies (XWDISCOs), except lifeline consumers, electric vehicle charging stations, prepaid consumers on prepaid tariffs, and electricity supplied under the applicable exempted categories.
The decision follows a request by the Central Power Purchasing Agency Guaranteed (CPPA G), which had sought approval for a Rs. 1.20 per unit fuel charge adjustment. After reviewing the submitted data, NEPRA reduced the recoverable amount to Rs. 0.7503 per unit.
In its determination, the regulator expressed concern over Rs. 4.9 billion in partial loading charges incurred during June 2026, noting that the amount was about Rs. 1 billion higher than in the corresponding month last year.
NEPRA directed the CPPA G to present a strategy to reduce partial loading charges. In response, the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) said shutting down power plants to avoid partial loading would result in significantly higher startup costs, making the current operating approach more economical.
