Sindh Agriculture University Shuts Down After Violent Clashes Leave 11 Injured
Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam, suspended all academic activities for Wednesday after violent clashes involving students and members of two communities left at least 11 people injured.
The unrest began on Tuesday morning when two students, one belonging to the Baloch tribe and the other to the Kaleri community, got into a dispute over a chair in the crop production faculty.
The situation escalated after members of the Kaleri community reached the university and chased the Baloch student and his supporters toward the administration block.
University security personnel and police intervened and managed to control the situation inside the campus. However, supporters from both communities later gathered outside the university’s main gate, where another clash broke out.
Shots were also fired by unidentified individuals during the confrontation, leaving one Kaleri man injured.
A large police contingent was deployed to prevent further escalation.
The injured were shifted to the nearby Rural Health Centre (RHC), where violence erupted again after a group of men armed with axes, sticks and other blunt objects entered the facility and attacked members of the rival group.
The attackers also damaged windowpanes and other fixtures at the health center.
Witnesses said some injured people were taken away from the RHC by their supporters before they could receive proper medical treatment.
Tandojam police confirmed the identities of 11 injured people and detained some of them from the health facility, saying that most were involved in the clashes.
Those identified from the Kaleri community were Gul Zaman, who suffered bullet injuries, Ghulam Asghar, Zameer Hussain, Ghulam Hussain, Roshan Ali and Mashkoor Hussain.
The injured from the Baloch tribe were identified as Abdul Hakeem, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Ilyas and Zahid.
In a statement, an SAU spokesperson said the initial altercation between the students was quickly brought under control with the assistance of university security and police.
The spokesperson said the subsequent clash involving members of the two communities took place outside the university premises.
SAU later suspended all academic activities for Wednesday as a precautionary measure to prevent further tension and ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff.
The university administration said the closure was also aimed at protecting university property and directed all concerned to cooperate in maintaining peace and security on campus.
