Former Australian Star Calls Out PCB Over Imran Khan Sons’ Interview Complaint
Former Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over its complaint to Sky Sports regarding an interview with former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sons during the second Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s.
Khawaja responded to an ESPNcricinfo post about the PCB complaint with a blunt remark: “This has got to be a joke…”
The controversy began after Sky Sports aired a pre-recorded interview with Imran Khan’s sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, during the lunch break on the opening day of the Test. The interview was conducted by former England captain Michael Atherton and focused on their concerns about their father’s health and prison conditions.
According to reports, the PCB objected to political content being included in the match broadcast and attempted to prevent the interview from being aired.
The board reportedly warned that Pakistan’s players could remain in the dressing room instead of returning for the afternoon session if Sky Sports went ahead with the interview.
Sky Sports initially delayed the segment but later aired it during the lunch interval. Pakistan subsequently returned to the field following discussions involving the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and the match continued.
The PCB later lodged a formal complaint with Sky Sports over the broadcast. The matter was also reportedly raised with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
During the interview, Kasim and Sulaiman spoke about Imran Khan’s health, deteriorating eyesight, and conditions in prison.
In another event, Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has also spoken about Imran Khan’s situation, saying he hoped a court-ordered medical assessment would be allowed to take place and that Khan would continue to receive family visits and be treated with dignity.
Former international captains Greg Chappell, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, and Michael Atherton have also called for humane treatment and proper medical care for the former Pakistan captain and prime minister.
