US Wants Pakistan Like India Wants Iran
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington needs to have a relationship with Pakistan like India’s ties with Iran.
Speaking in an interview with India’s Network18 during his visit to New Delhi, Rubio said nuclear-armed Pakistan was a country the United States needed to engage with despite disagreements. He said Pakistan possesses nuclear weapons and occupies an important geographic position.
Rubio Says Pakistan Ties Could Address India’s Concerns
Rubio said maintaining communication with Islamabad could also help Washington address India’s security concerns.
He acknowledged the challenges of managing relationships with countries that have differing interests but said diplomatic engagement remained essential to US foreign policy.
As secretary of state, he said his responsibility was to manage America’s foreign relations, including with countries with which Washington disagrees.
Pakistan and US
Relations between Washington and Islamabad have warmed following US President Donald Trump’s role in helping broker a ceasefire between Pakistan and India after their brief conflict.
Leaders from both countries have since exchanged positive statements, while Pakistan has sought improved trade terms, tariff concessions, and greater access to the US market.
Pakistan has also taken on a diplomatic role in efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran.
Islamabad brokered a two-week ceasefire between the two countries on April 8, followed by talks in the Pakistani capital on April 11 and 12.
