UHS Revises MDS Curricula After Nearly 20 Years

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has revised the curricula for postgraduate Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programs in four major dental specialties after nearly two decades.

The decision came during the 229th meeting of the Advanced Studies & Research Board (ASRB) at UHS on Thursday. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nadia Naseem chaired the meeting. The revised curricula cover operative dentistry, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

UHS said the revisions will bring postgraduate dental training in line with developments in dentistry, modern medical education practices and the changing needs of specialist healthcare. Board members described the curriculum revision as a long-awaited exercise.

Specialty advisory committees comprising subject experts reviewed the curricula in collaboration with the UHS Department of Medical Education. The revised programs also follow guidelines issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC), as well as the UHS Level-III MD/MS/MDS Regulations 2024.

The Board of Studies (Dentistry) had previously reviewed the revised curricula and recommended their submission to the Academic Council through the ASRB.

Prof. Dr. Sarah Ghafoor, Convener of the Board of Studies (Dentistry) and officiating head of the Department of Medical Education, briefed the ASRB on the structure and key features of the revised curricula. The ASRB also reviewed thesis evaluation cases from various postgraduate disciplines during the meeting.
