Sweden has changed its permanent residence rules, allowing eligible temporary residence permit holders to apply as soon as they complete the required qualification period instead of waiting until their current permit is due for renewal.
Under the previous rule, applicants who had already completed the required residence period still had to wait until their temporary permit came up for renewal before applying for permanent residence.
Now, eligible applicants can submit their permanent residence application while their existing temporary permit is still valid.
For most work permit holders, the qualification period for permanent residence is four years. EU Blue Card holders and researcher permit holders can qualify after three years.
Once permanent residence is granted, the temporary residence permit can be revoked and replaced with the permanent residence permit.
The amendment does not create a new route to permanent residence and does not change the existing qualification requirements. Applicants must continue to meet the same eligibility conditions.
The change is expected to allow eligible foreign nationals to obtain permanent residence sooner, reducing uncertainty over their immigration status and the risk of having to apply for an extension of their temporary permit. It also gives successful applicants earlier access to the benefits of permanent residence.
Employers may also benefit from greater workforce flexibility, as permanent residence applications will no longer need to be timed around employees’ temporary permit expiry dates.
