The Sindh Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions has directed all privately managed schools across the province to strictly implement fire prevention and safety measures to protect students, teachers and staff.
In a reminder issued on August 27, the directorate instructed school principals and administrators to ensure that all prescribed fire safety arrangements remain operational at all times.
The schools must install and regularly test fire alarms, smoke detectors and appropriate fire extinguishers on every floor and at critical locations. They must also keep emergency exits, staircases and escape routes unlocked, clearly marked, adequately illuminated and free from obstructions.
The directive requires schools to arrange periodic inspections of electrical wiring, switchboards, laboratories, kitchens, generator rooms and other high-risk areas through qualified professionals.
Schools must also display updated fire evacuation plans, floor maps and emergency instructions at prominent locations and conduct fire evacuation drills at least three times during each academic year while maintaining proper records.
The directorate further instructed schools to train teaching and non-teaching staff in fire emergency response, evacuation procedures and basic first aid. Schools must also make arrangements for the safe and assisted evacuation of students and designate clearly identified assembly points outside their buildings.
The schools must comply with applicable fire safety laws and building regulations and maintain valid safety certificates. The directorate has also directed schools to submit compliance reports confirming that all necessary arrangements and firefighting equipment are available on their premises.
