Sindh Govt Extends Service of Ex-CM Qaim Ali Shah’s Daughter 1 Day Before Her Retirement
The Sindh government has granted a three-year extension to Dr Nighat Shah as professor at Jinnah Sindh Medical University, just a day before her scheduled retirement from government service at the age of 60.
The Universities and Boards Department has directed the JSMU vice chancellor to implement the provincial cabinet’s decision immediately and ensure strict compliance.
In its letter, the department referred to the cabinet meeting held on August 5, 2026, and said the decision was taken in the larger public interest.
The cabinet approved Dr Nighat Shah’s appointment for three more years under the procedure outlined in a Pakistan Medical and Dental Council notification issued on May 19, 2026.
Officials said the decision was linked to continuity in specialised healthcare services, academic leadership, postgraduate medical education, research and institutional performance.
JSMU had earlier issued a retirement memorandum stating that Dr Nighat Shah would retire from government service on August 12, 2026.
The PM&DC notification allows public-sector medical and dental institutions to hire retired faculty members on contract until the age of 65, but says such appointments should not affect the promotion or career progress of junior faculty.
The extension has raised questions about its impact on the promotion prospects of younger faculty members at JSMU.
