The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) spent Rs. 29.6 billion on printing currency notes during FY2025-26, up from Rs. 27.8 billion a year earlier.
The expenditure increased by Rs. 1.8 billion, or around 6 percent, during the year.
The higher cost came as currency in circulation continued to rise. Banknotes in circulation increased by Rs. 1.8 trillion during FY26, taking the total currency in circulation to Rs. 12.659 trillion by the end of the financial year.
Higher costs of paper, ink, transportation, and other logistics may have also contributed to the increase in printing expenses.
Currency notes are printed by Pakistan Security Printing Corporation (Private) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the SBP.
The increase in currency circulation comes despite rapid growth in digital payments in Pakistan. The SBP has taken several measures to promote digital payments, including the launch of its payment system subsidiary, RAAST.
SBP is also expected to incur additional printing costs as new currency notes with redesigned features are introduced.
