Saudi Arabia has revised parts of its school curriculum to remove negative portrayals of LGBTQ+, continuing a shift toward Western gender inclusivity.
The latest curriculum changes include revisions or removals of lessons that previously reinforced traditional gender hierarchies or used discriminatory language related to gender and sexual orientation.
One notable change appears in a Grade 11 Islamic Studies textbook.
Earlier versions asked students to explain why the Saudi government refused to legalize homosexuality.
The lesson also described homosexuality as a “sexual perversion” and linked it to groups allegedly seeking to undermine Islam.
However, the revised textbook has now removed that question and the accompanying negative language.
In addition, several lessons that presented traditional gender roles in a hierarchical way have either been changed or removed from the curriculum.
The revision does not mean Saudi Arabia has changed its laws or official policies regarding homosexuality.
