The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has proposed a Rs. 3 billion multi-storey parking plaza on Jinnah Road to address the growing parking crisis in and around Raja Bazaar.
A senior RMC official said the civic body had engaged NESPAK to prepare a feasibility study for the project. The report was completed last year and submitted to the Punjab government for approval, but the provincial government has yet to give the go-ahead.
The proposed plaza would be constructed on the site of RMC’s old office on Jinnah Road, commonly known as City Saddar Road.
The land, measuring around three kanals and 10 marlas, became available after the 145-year-old RMC building was demolished in 2016. The civic body had planned to utilize the site for a multi-storey parking facility.
According to the initial plan, the plaza was originally envisaged as a five-storey structure, including a basement. The ground floor would be used for shops, while the remaining floors and basement would provide parking facilities.
The proposed facility is expected to accommodate around 4,200 motorcycles and 1,500 cars at a time.
The project has gained importance after the section of Raja Bazaar between Fawara Chowk and Hamilton Road was converted into a pedestrian street, reducing available parking space in the busy commercial area.
An RMC official said another parking facility was essential to cater to visitors to Raja Bazaar and surrounding markets.
The proposal, however, remains subject to approval from the Punjab government.
