Reddit is testing a new way to consume its traditionally text-heavy posts by turning selected discussions into audio and short-form videos narrated by AI voices.
The company describes the rollout as a limited experiment involving a small selection of posts from certain communities. Users can choose between reading the original discussion or playing its audio/video version. The original posts and comments remain unchanged.
Reddit Posts Can Now Become Videos
In one example, Reddit converted an eight-year-old r/boardgames discussion about road-trip games for adults into a roughly three-minute video.
AI-generated voices read the original question and selected replies while the corresponding text appears on screen. Reddit labels the format as a “Real conversation voiced by AI.”
Reddit is currently choosing which posts are converted rather than allowing every user to generate these versions themselves. The experiment is available on the web and is rolling out through Reddit’s iOS and Android apps.
Reddit Wants People to Listen Instead of Read
CEO Steve Huffman previewed the idea during Reddit’s second-quarter earnings call in July.
He pointed to the popularity of videos and podcast-style content on other platforms where creators simply read Reddit stories and comments aloud. Reddit now wants to bring that experience directly onto its own platform.
The format could make long Reddit discussions easier to consume while commuting, exercising, or doing other activities where reading a large thread is inconvenient.
Reddit Is Moving Further Into Video
The experiment follows Reddit’s introduction of video comments in June. That feature lets users record or upload videos directly into eligible comment sections and watch replies in a full-screen player.
Reddit says the new audio and video experiment is designed to determine whether users find these formats useful while still keeping the experience authentic to the platform.
For a platform historically built around text discussions, the test signals a notable shift toward making Reddit content easier to watch and listen to rather than only read.
