The Balochistan government has decided to launch a modern Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in the provincial capital, Quetta, following the introduction of similar mass transit systems in several other major cities across Pakistan.
According to Transport Department officials, the provincial government has decided to proceed with the proposed BRT project to improve public transportation in Quetta. Five foreign companies have expressed interest in conducting the feasibility study for the project.
Officials said one of the interested foreign companies will be selected to conduct the feasibility study. The government will begin practical work on the project after receiving the feasibility study report and reviewing its recommendations.
The Quetta BRT project is expected to cost more than Rs. 300 billion, according to Transport Department officials. The authorities expect to complete the project by 2032.
Quetta will become the latest major Pakistani city to pursue a BRT system, following Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Karachi and Peshawar.
