Qualcomm Wins Legal Battle Against Arm — Wins $2 Only

Qualcomm has scored a legal victory against Arm following a five-day trial in Delaware, but the jury awarded the chipmaker just $2 in damages.

The amount was split across two findings, with Qualcomm receiving $1 for each claim it won.

Arm Breached Obligations

The jury found that Arm breached obligations related to providing Qualcomm with software patches and tools for licensed designs.

It also found that Arm interfered with negotiations between Qualcomm and Meta after information was leaked to Bloomberg News about Arm’s plan to terminate Qualcomm’s chip design license.

Qualcomm received $1 in damages for each issue. However, the jury sided with Arm on five other claims in the case.

$2 Award Could Have Major Consequences

Despite the nominal damages, the verdict could become important in the next stage of the legal dispute.

Qualcomm and Arm will now appear before US District Judge Maryellen Noreika to argue several remaining issues.

One possibility is that Qualcomm could be allowed to stop paying royalties to Arm for five years. Those payments could be worth billions of dollars over that period.

The penalty is included in the licensing agreement between the companies, although Arm argues that the provision cannot be enforced.

Both Companies Claim Victory

Qualcomm said it was pleased that the jury found Arm had breached its long-standing Architectural License Agreement and had intentionally interfered with Qualcomm’s business.

Arm, meanwhile, pointed to the jury siding with it on most of the disputed issues and argued that the $2 damages award supported its position.

The dispute is unlikely to end with this verdict, as further court proceedings and appeals are expected.
