The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has introduced detailed technical standards for Bluetooth, Wi Fi, Global Positioning System, Near Field Communication and Radio Frequency Identification devices under the Telecommunication Equipment Standards Regulations, 2024.
The new requirements set technical standards for the operation and testing of widely used wireless devices. They cover radio frequency performance, data transmission, reception, spectrum use and electromagnetic compatibility.
Bluetooth and Wi Fi equipment must meet standards for wideband data transmission systems operating in the 2.4 gigahertz band. Additional requirements have also been introduced for Wi Fi devices operating in the 5 gigahertz frequency bands.
Separate technical requirements have been set for GPS receivers, NFC devices operating at 13.56 megahertz and RFID equipment used for identification and data transmission. The framework also covers other short range devices operating across specified frequency ranges.
The requirements apply to PTA licensees, manufacturers and importers of telecommunications equipment. The equipment must meet the relevant technical standards and complete the required certification process before being imported, deployed or used operationally in Pakistan.
