The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy rain, wind and thunderstorms across the country’s upper and central regions during August 17-21, prone to urban floods in several major cities and landslides in hilly areas.
Strong monsoon currents are penetrating the upper parts of the country which is predicted to increase rainfall activity over the coming days.
The forecast covers Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Lahore, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Jhelum, Chakwal, Attock, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sargodha, Mianwali and several other districts of Punjab.
Southern Punjab, including Faisalabad, Jhang, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan, is expected to receive rain mainly on August 20-21.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain with isolated heavy falls is likely in Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swat, Dir, Chitral, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Kohistan, Malakand and other districts during August 17-21.
Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Tank, Lakki Marwat and Waziristan are expected to receive rain toward the end of the forecast period.
PMD has also forecast rain and thunderstorms in Azad Jammu and Kashmir from the evening of August 16 through August 21.
Gilgit-Baltistan could receive rainfall during August 18-21.
Most parts of Sindh and Balochistan are likely to remain hot and humid. However, rain is expected in Musakhel, Barkhan, Zhob, Kalat and Khuzdar on August 17-20.
Heavy downpours could trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore till August 20. Landslides may occur in the hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Azad Kashmir.
Tourists and travelers have been advised to remain cautious. Farmers have been urged to plan agricultural activities according to weather conditions.
PMD has advised authorities to stay alert and take precautionary measures during this period.
