The Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) has urged Pakistan to accelerate investment in climate resilience, early-warning systems and disaster preparedness following the devastating floods in Nepal.
The chamber expressed condolences to the people of Nepal over the loss of lives and widespread damage caused by the flash floods, saying the disaster highlights the need for countries vulnerable to climate-related events to strengthen their preparedness.
OICCI said Pakistan faces similar risks, having experienced repeated floods, displacement, destruction of infrastructure and loss of livelihoods in recent years.
“Pakistan cannot wait for disasters to happen before preparing for them,” the chamber said, stressing the importance of anticipating risks and taking preventive measures.
Pakistan remains highly exposed to climate-related threats. The country recorded its second-warmest year in 65 years in 2025, after 2024 became its warmest year on record. Rising temperatures, glacial melt and changing rainfall patterns are increasing risks to communities, agriculture, infrastructure and the economy.
OICCI also cited Climate Change Minister Musadik Masood Malik, who said earlier this year that climate-related impacts cost Pakistan around 1 percent of GDP annually.
The chamber said ongoing efforts to improve early-warning systems for glacial lake outburst floods, flash floods, urban flooding and heatwaves are important but need to be strengthened further.
It called for a smarter disaster management approach that can identify high-risk areas, predict potential threats and give authorities and communities enough time to respond.
OICCI also urged greater investment in climate-resilient infrastructure, predictive technologies, emergency response capabilities and community-level preparedness.
The chamber said stronger climate resilience would help protect lives, infrastructure and livelihoods as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe.
