Pakistan has made its first ambassadorial-level appointment to Armenia, marking another step in relations between the two countries after they formally established diplomatic ties last year.
Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan presented his Letters of Credence to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Yerevan.
Khan currently serves as Pakistan’s ambassador to the UAE and will concurrently serve as the country’s non-resident ambassador to Armenia.
Pakistan and Armenia formally established diplomatic relations through a joint communiqué signed in August 2025.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the development on August 31, saying that he and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan had reaffirmed their commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter.
The two countries also agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in several areas, including the economy, education, culture, and tourism.
During the credential ceremony, President Khachaturyan congratulated Khan on his appointment and wished him success in carrying out his diplomatic responsibilities.
The Armenian president also expressed his willingness to support efforts to further develop relations between Armenia and Pakistan and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Khan conveyed greetings and best wishes from President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the Armenian president and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
Both sides highlighted the potential to expand cooperation in trade and investment, education, culture, people-to-people contacts, and other areas of economic engagement.
During his visit to Yerevan, Khan also met Armenia’s foreign minister, who congratulated him on his appointment.
The two sides reviewed the bilateral agenda, discussed opportunities to expand cooperation, and exchanged views on regional and international developments.
Khan also met Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Mnatsakan Safaryan and presented him with a copy of his Letters of Credence.
Safaryan described the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Armenia as an important policy decision by the leadership of both countries.
The two sides also discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation at bilateral and multilateral forums.
