Pakistan and the Asian Development Bank have discussed an early start to work on the planned modernization of the Main Line 1 railway, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calling for the project to move forward quickly.
The discussion took place during a meeting between Shehbaz and ADB Vice President Yingming Yang, where both sides reviewed infrastructure and development priorities under the new 2026 to 2030 Country Partnership Strategy.
The ML 1 corridor, which runs from Karachi to Peshawar, was a central focus of the meeting. Shehbaz said upgrading the railway is important for improving freight logistics, regional trade connectivity and major industrial projects.
The prime minister also called for the early groundbreaking of the ML 1 project, describing it as a key infrastructure priority for modernizing Pakistan’s transport network.
The 1,733 kilometer ML 1 corridor runs through major cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, Rohri, Multan, Lahore and Rawalpindi and is a major component of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.
The meeting also covered cooperation in the private sector, energy and food security, export competitiveness, artificial intelligence and information technology.
