The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched a multibillion-rupee expansion and modernization drive across the country as it marks two years since its establishment, with major projects focused on expanding airport capacity and upgrading infrastructure.
According to a PAA spokesperson, the authority currently manages 26 operational airports and provides facilities to more than 22 million passengers annually. PAA has completed the New Gwadar International Airport at a cost of Rs. 55 billion and reconstructed the main runway at Karachi airport for Rs. 10 billion.
The authority has also completed rehabilitation and upgrades at the airports in Dera Ismail Khan, Parachinar and Turbat. PAA has allocated Rs. 43 billion for a major expansion project at Lahore airport and Rs. 70 billion for development work at Skardu airport.
The authority has also converted Islamabad International Airport into Pakistan’s first fully cashless airport. Other ongoing projects include a cargo village at Karachi airport, a new air traffic control tower at Peshawar airport and a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at Islamabad airport.
PAA is also investing billions of rupees in modern security screening systems, e-gates and air traffic management systems to improve airport operations and passenger services. The authority is considering new greenfield airports in Sukkur, Faisalabad and Dera Ismail Khan.
For fiscal year 2026-27, PAA has secured a development budget of more than Rs. 69 billion, marking a 110% increase.
