NICVD to Introduce Advanced Cardiac Program
The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases has approved plans to establish an advanced heart failure program based on Left Ventricular Assist Device technology and begin preparations for a future heart transplant program.
The decisions were taken at the 85th meeting of the NICVD Governing Body, chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at the Chief Minister’s House in Karachi.
The chief minister said his government remains committed to providing free, quality and accessible cardiac care to patients from Sindh and across Pakistan. He described NICVD as a flagship healthcare institution and a national asset.
He directed the institute to work with national and international medical institutions to secure technical assistance, training and expertise for the new heart failure initiative.
The meeting also reviewed NICVD’s performance and was informed that the institute delivered a large volume of specialised services during 2025, including thousands of cardiac procedures, surgeries and emergency consultations.
Officials said NICVD Karachi treated more than 1.32 million patients from outside Sindh between 2019 and 2025, including patients from Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The governing body also approved the voluntary appointment of US-based cardiologist Prof Javed Suleman as Professor of Cardiology and Medical Director at NICVD without financial liability to the institute or the Sindh government.
Murad Ali Shah directed the management to complete ongoing projects on time and said the Sindh government would continue to support efforts aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare.
