New Policy Ready to Make Phones and Tracking Devices in Pakistan
The federal government is preparing a Made in Pakistan policy to encourage local manufacturing of mobile phones, laptops and a wide range of other electronic devices, with tax incentives proposed for manufacturers.
Under the proposed policy, Pakistan would also promote domestic production of signal boosters, dongles, biometric machines, POS machines, tracking systems and smartwatches.
The government has drafted the policy to reduce Pakistan’s import bill for electronic devices and expand the country’s manufacturing base. However, implementation has been delayed as the policy is yet to receive final approval.
The proposal includes tax exemptions on raw materials used to manufacture electronic devices in Pakistan. It also suggests imposing a levy of up to 5 percent on imported electronic products to encourage local production.
The government also plans to facilitate access to industrial inputs and heavy machinery needed to establish and expand electronics manufacturing facilities.
Pakistan currently imports more than $422.3 million worth of electronic devices annually. The government expects local manufacturing to reduce the import burden alongside creating a local electronics industry.
