New iOS Feature Allows One Phone Number on Two iPhones

Apple is adding a new iPhone Handoff feature to iOS 27 that lets users switch between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number active on either device.

The feature was briefly mentioned during Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote in June. It appeared on a slide listing hundreds of changes coming to iOS 27 and other software updates, but Apple did not explain how it would work at the time.

How iPhone Handoff Works

Users will be able to set up iPhone Handoff through Settings > Cellular. During setup, Apple lets users designate one iPhone as the main device and the other as the companion device.

The user’s primary eSIM stays on the main iPhone. The companion device receives a separate companion eSIM, allowing the same phone number to be switched between the two iPhones.

Apple will manage all cellular settings from the main iPhone. Location sharing will also follow whichever iPhone is currently being used with the phone number.

This means users can move between the two devices without having to manually transfer their primary eSIM each time.

Carrier Support Will Be Required

The feature will require two iPhones running iOS 27, as well as support from the user’s cellular carrier.

The MacRumors forum post suggests that T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany could be among the first carriers to support iPhone Handoff. Apple has not yet provided a complete list of supported carriers.

Because carrier support is required, the feature may not be immediately available to all iPhone users when iOS 27 launches.

Coming Soon

iPhone Handoff has been in beta testing alongside iOS 27. Following roughly three months of testing, Apple is expected to release the update later this month.

Apple is likely to provide more information about iPhone Handoff as the public release approaches, including details about supported carriers and device requirements.
