Net metering’s share of total power generation increased by 39 basis points year over year to around 2.2 percent in July 2026, despite a decline in overall power generation during the month.
According to net metering data compiled by Arif Habib Limited based on National Electric Power Regulatory Authority data, net metering units excluding K Electric consumers fell 33 percent month over month in July.
The decline reflects lower solar adoption and greater dependence on grid supplied electricity.
Overall power generation also remained under pressure, declining 0.9 percent year over year in July. Despite the recent weakness in generation, NEPRA expects power demand to increase by 1.0 percent year over year in calendar year 2026.
The latest data come as the government moves to clear a large backlog of rooftop solar applications following the shift from net metering to net billing.
On Saturday, the Power Division said 11,695 of 16,654 pending net metering applications had been cleared after a verification exercise, with the remaining 4,959 cases still under review.
The government had earlier directed authorities to process eligible applications submitted before the February 9 transition under the previous framework.
