Microsoft is expanding support for Anthropic’s Claude models across Microsoft 365 Copilot, giving users more alternatives to OpenAI’s GPT models inside its productivity apps.
Microsoft first added Anthropic models to Copilot in September 2025. At the time, Claude Opus 4.1 became available in the Researcher agent, while Claude Opus 4.1 and Sonnet 4 were added to Copilot Studio.
The integration has since expanded significantly.
Claude Opus 5 Comes to More Microsoft 365 Apps
Microsoft is now rolling out Claude Opus 5 through the model selector in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Copilot Chat, Copilot Cowork, and Copilot Studio.
In Copilot Chat, Microsoft says Opus 5 is suited to open-ended problems, planning, comparing different options, and other tasks that require stronger reasoning.
Copilot Cowork can use the model for longer-running projects involving multiple files and tools.
Meanwhile, Copilot Studio allows businesses to build AI agents powered by Claude Opus 5 for reasoning, workflow automation, and multi-step tasks.
Microsoft Is Expanding Its Multi-Model Strategy
The move reflects Microsoft’s growing multi-model approach to Copilot.
Microsoft continues to offer OpenAI models across its AI products. GPT-5.6 was added to Microsoft 365 Copilot in July 2026, but users increasingly have the option to choose different models depending on the task.
Microsoft’s Researcher agent also supports both GPT and Claude models. Administrators can enable Anthropic models, allowing users to select Claude for complex research involving the web as well as their organization’s files, emails, meetings, and chats.
The expansion gives Microsoft 365 Copilot users more flexibility while reducing the platform’s dependence on a single AI provider.
