KP Orders Safety Inspection of Private Schools After Peshawar Roof Collapse

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has set up district-level inquiry committees to inspect private school buildings across the province and assess whether they meet basic safety requirements.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Department has directed the committees to submit comprehensive inspection reports and recommendations within three days of the notification’s issuance.

The move follows the collapse of a classroom roof at a private school in Peshawar’s Deir Colony area. In response, the provincial government ordered province-wide inspections to identify structural hazards and protect students and staff.

According to the department’s notification, the committees will examine the structural stability, physical condition, and suitability of private school buildings for educational activities. The inspections will cover roofs, walls, columns, beams, foundations, staircases, and other key structural components.

Based on their findings, the committees will classify buildings in three categories: safe, requiring repairs, and potentially unsafe. The classification is intended to help authorities identify schools where immediate action is needed.

The committees will propose necessary repairs, structural strengthening, and rehabilitation for buildings found to be hazardous. District authorities must also be informed without delay if a building presents an immediate danger. Where safety concerns warrant it, the committees may recommend restricting entry or suspending use of affected buildings.

District monitoring officers will lead the committees, which will also include officials from the education department and a representative of the Communications and Works Department.

The initiative aims to identify dangerous structures, address building-related risks promptly, and provide students and teachers with safer learning environments. The overall condition of private school buildings, and the extent of any further action, will become clearer once the inspection reports are submitted.
