Israel Installed Surveillance Software in Al Jazeera Which is Blocked in Pakistan
Two Israeli companies used online advertisements to install spyware on 45 devices at Al Jazeera, according to researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab.
The findings concern the Qatari broadcaster whose website has also faced access restrictions in Pakistan.
Citizen Lab linked the attacks to spyware developer Candiru and advertising technology company Discover Tech. Researchers said the companies delivered malicious advertisements in 2024 and 2025, allowing surveillance software to infect devices and collect data without users clicking a link.
Discover Tech allegedly operated an advertising platform called Controlium, which built profiles of millions of people and helped spyware companies deliver targeted ads containing malicious code.
Following the findings, Google confirmed Discover Tech’s involvement in spyware delivery and blocked it from its advertising platforms. Industry association IAB Europe also suspended the company from its vendor list.
