The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation has strengthened chlorination, water quality monitoring, surveillance, and public awareness efforts to reduce the risk of waterborne infections, including Naegleria fowleri.
A high-level meeting reviewed measures to prevent further cases of the brain-eating amoeba and to ensure safe drinking water for citizens.
Officials decided to collect and test water samples from across Karachi in coordination with the provincial health department.
The meeting followed the death of a 44-year-old man earlier this month from the infection. Officials said he had no history of swimming and may have contracted the amoeba through contaminated, non-chlorinated tap water.
KWSC officials said the utility is maintaining round-the-clock chlorination at nine filtration plants across six sites in line with World Health Organization standards.
They added that around 240 chlorine cylinders are used every month.
Officials also said 16 chlorination points have already been established across the city with World Bank support, while 29 more will be added in the second phase.
The health department and KWSC will jointly collect and analyse water samples, while WHO and Unicef have been asked to provide chlorine tablets and other protective supplies.
KWSC said residents should clean water storage tanks every six months, use chlorinated or boiled water for ablution and nasal cleansing, avoid unchlorinated pools, and get water only from approved tankers to reduce infection risks.
