Punjab Education Minister Rejects 3-Day School Closure Plan

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has opposed the proposal to keep schools closed three days a week, saying that shutting schools on Fridays would not result in any significant savings.

In an interview, Hayat said that no proposal regarding a three-day weekly school closure has so far been presented to him in his capacity as Punjab’s education minister.

He also urged the federal government to exempt the education sector from any such restrictions and allow schools to continue operating according to their regular academic schedule.

Explaining his position, the minister said that closing schools on Fridays would have little impact on diesel consumption or other expenses, as around 90% of students at government schools walk to school.

He added that a similar proportion of students at private schools also travel to school on foot, meaning that school closures would not achieve the intended goal of reducing fuel consumption.

Hayat stressed that the education sector should be exempted from such measures and that schools should remain open on all scheduled teaching days.
