JPMC Nurses Protest in Karachi Over Alleged Violation of Seniority Rules
Nurses at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) in Karachi staged a protest and boycotted patient services over alleged violations of seniority rules in the appointment of senior nursing officials.
Sources said the protest led to the cancellation of all operations scheduled for the day and severely affected services in intensive care units and hospital wards.
A senior staffer representing the Young Nurses’ Association alleged that the administration had ignored the approved seniority list while appointing officials to the posts of chief nursing superintendent and deputy/assistant nursing superintendent.
He said junior staff members were appointed to the top nursing positions, despite the seniority list having been approved by the hospital administration and the provincial government.
The protest forced the JPMC administration to hold talks with representatives of the nurses within hours. Following the meeting, the administration issued another letter regarding the appointments in accordance with the seniority list.
JPMC spokesperson Dr. Waqas Khan confirmed that patient services were affected by the protest but said the situation remained under control with the help of medical students and paramedical staff.
He also confirmed that a new letter was issued after the meeting between administrative officials and nurses’ representatives.
