Apple has entered a new era as Tim Cook steps down as CEO and John Ternus takes over the company’s top job.
Cook joined Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011 after Steve Jobs resigned because of health problems. He led the company for 15 years before handing control to Ternus on September 1.
Cook is not leaving Apple completely. He will remain with the company as executive chairman.
End of the Tim Cook Era
The iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were the last iPhones developed with design oversight from Steve Jobs.
Jobs died only days after the iPhone 4s was unveiled, but he had still influenced development of the following iPhone 5 generation.
Apple’s subsequent iPhones and the company’s major expansion into new product categories took place under Cook’s leadership.
Before leaving the CEO role, Cook thanked the Apple community and said that although his title was changing, his connection with the community would not. He said he was grateful for the support he had received and was looking forward to the next chapter.
John Ternus Takes Control
Ternus served as Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering before becoming CEO.
In that position, he oversaw hardware engineering teams responsible for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Vision Pro and other Apple products.
His background means Apple is now being led by an executive with extensive experience developing the company’s hardware.
Ternus has been associated with the development of products including AirPods, the iPhone Air and MacBook Neo.
His promotion marks Apple’s first CEO change since Cook replaced Jobs in 2011 and puts one of the company’s most senior hardware executives in charge of its next generation of products.
