Japan Approves Grant to Build Vocational Training Institution for Pakistani Women
Japan has approved a grant of $53,419, or Rs14.8 million, for the construction of a women’s vocational training institute in Chakwal district of Punjab.
The grant has been awarded to the Moawin Foundation under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects programme to expand skills-development opportunities for women in rural communities and help them achieve greater economic independence.
The grant contract was signed at the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad by Japanese Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi and a representative of the Moawin Foundation.
Under the project, titled “The Project for the Construction of Women’s Vocational Training Institute in Village Dulmial, District Chakwal,” a dedicated training facility will be established in Village Dulmial to provide women from surrounding communities with access to vocational education and income-generating skills.
The institute will be built on land donated by the local community and will offer structured courses in dressmaking, stitching and fashion design.
It is expected to train about 240 women each year, giving them practical skills to earn incomes and build more secure livelihoods.
The Japanese embassy said women in rural areas often face greater barriers to acquiring practical skills and securing stable incomes because of limited employment opportunities as well as economic and environmental challenges.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ambassador Akamatsu expressed hope that the new institute would serve women and families in the local community for many years.
He appreciated the community’s contribution of land for the project and said Japan was pleased to support its aspiration for a permanent vocational training facility.
The ambassador said the initiative also reflects Japan’s longstanding commitment to women’s empowerment and human security at the grassroots level.
The Moawin Foundation has been working with underserved communities across Pakistan, and its vocational training programmes have expanded over the years to reach more people in need.
The Japanese government said it will continue working with local non-governmental organisations in Pakistan through the GGP programme to strengthen human security at the grassroots level.
It expressed hope that the Chakwal project will further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Japan and Pakistan.
